ప్రతి మనిషికి కొన్ని కళలు ఉంటాయి…కొన్ని మెళుకువలు ఉంటాయి. వాటిలో కొన్ని ఉగ్గుపాలతో వస్తే, మరి కొన్ని కష్టాలతో , కన్నీళ్ళతో ఉబికి వస్తాయి. వీటిని తీసుకెళ్లి జీవిత బజార్ లో పెట్టి విలువ కట్టుకుంటారు. వచ్చిన లాభ నష్ఠాలతో వైకుంఠపాళి ఆడతారు. ఇది ఎవరికైనా తప్పేది కాదు. ప్రతి ఒక్కరు కళా సరస్వతిని మెళుకువతో   లక్ష్మి దేవి ని అరువు తెచ్చుకునేవారే. అయితే కొందరు అరువు అనే సంగతి గ్రహించి జాగ్రత్త పడతారు, కొందరు ఇంకా పై పైకి నిచ్ఛేనలు వేసి ఒక రోజు అగాధం లోకి పడిపోతారు. ఎవరో కోటి కి ఒక్కరు, బమ్మెర పోతన లాగా, ఇవన్నీ ఎందుకులే అని పొలం, హలం అంటూ తృప్తిపడి, తమ విద్యకు ఖరీదు కట్టకుండా పొట్టకూటికి మార్గం చేసుకుని, కలల సౌధాలు వద్దనుకుంటారు. అయితే ఈ కలికాలం లో ‘పోతన’లు ఉండరు కదా…అందరూ అమ్మేవారు, కొనేవారు…ఒకరి కంటే ఒకరు పై ఎత్తులు వేసే వారు, ఇంకొంచెం ఎత్తుకు వెళ్లాలనే కాంక్ష ఉన్నవారే. ఎక్కడ ఆగాలో, ఎప్పుడు ఆపాలో తెలీక, కోరికల సెగలో మసి అయిపోయేవారే.

కళాప్రపూర్ణ రావూరి భరద్వాజ గారి నవల ‘పాకుడు రాళ్లు ‘ ఇటువంటి సగటు మనిషి చరిత్ర. ఇందులోని కథానాయిక మంగమ్మకి ఉగ్గుపాలోతో ఏ విద్య రాలేదు, ఈడు వచ్చాక అందం మాత్రం వచ్చింది. దానినే పెట్టుబడిగా ముందుకి సాగింది. జీవితంలో కష్టాలని దిగమ్రింగుకుని, ఆత్మ విశ్వాసంతో …ఆత్మ గౌరవాన్ని పణంగా పెట్టి కలల పధంలోకి సాగిపోయింది. ఒకటేమిటి, రెండేమిటి, అన్ని సాధించింది, ఇంకెన్నిటినో అధిగమించింది. కాదన్నవారిని కాలికి రప్పించుకుంది, అవున్నన్నవారిని కొందరిని ఆదరించింది. సినీ విలాకాశంలో ఒక్క వెలుగు వెలిగింది, మంజరిగా పేరు ప్రఖ్యాతలు, సిరి మూటలు కట్టుకుంది. తెరమీద కొన్ని వందల సార్లు సుఖాంతమైన ఆమె పాత్ర  చివరకు నిజ జీవితంలో ఒక ప్రశ్నగా మిగిలిపోయింది…అసంపూర్ణంగా ఒక మొగ్గలాగా రాలిపోయింది. అయితే తాను కోరుకున్న ప్రశాంతత … చివరగా, శాశ్వత నిద్ర మాత్రం దక్కించుకుంది.

 భరద్వాజ గారు సినిమా నేపధ్యం ఎన్నుకున్నా, అందులోని పాత్రలు ఏ ప్రాకులాట కైనా సరిపోతాయన్న అంత బాగా తీర్చిదిద్దారు. ముఖ్యంగా మంగమ్మ పాత్ర, తనకు కావాల్సిన వాటిని సొంతం చేసుకోవడానికి ఎంత కష్టపడిందో చూపించి, అదే కాంక్ష కట్టెలు త్రుంచుకొన్నప్పుడు ఎలాంటి అనర్ధాలకు దారితీస్తుందో ఒక ప్రత్యేక శైలిలో చెప్పారు. మంగమ్మ ఎన్నుకున్న విధానాన్ని ఆవిడ చుట్టూ ఉన్న ప్రపంచాన్ని ఒక సూత్రధారి దృక్పధంలోంచి మాత్రేమే చూపిస్తూ, మధ్య మధ్యలో ఒక బాధ్యత గల రచయిత గా రవ్వంత నిట్టూర్పులతో తాను చెప్పాలనుకున్నదీ చెప్పారు. మాధవరావు తో మొదలుకుని, చలపతి, శర్మ..చిట్టచివరకు సక్సేనా వరకు, మంగమ్మ చిక్కుకున్న వలయంలో పేర్లు వేరయినా స్వభావాలు ఇంచు మించు ఒకటేనని చాల చక్కగా సమాజాన్ని ప్రతిబింబించారు. మంగమ్మ మంజరిగా మారాక, తానొక కొత్త ప్రపంచం సృష్టి చేసుకున్నట్లని తోచిన, చివరకు అది కూడా ఒక వలయమై, తనకు ఊపిరాడకుండా చేసినట్టు చూపించారు. తుదకు, పాత్రలు మారినా, కధ అంతం కాదు అన్నట్టు, విజయ, చంద్రంల పాత్రల ద్వారా గుర్తు చేసారు. 

‘పాకుడు రాళ్లు’ లోని కథ ఒక మారుమూల గ్రామంతో మొదలయి, అమెరికా దాకా సాగుతుంది. ఈ విధముగా ఈ నవలను ఒక ఎపిక్ లాగా మలిచారు, భరద్వాజ గారు. కంటి ముందు ప్రపంచానికి ఎంత డైమెన్షన్ ఇచ్చారో, మనసుల లోతుల్లోని భావాలను కూడా అంతే హృద్యంగా పలికించారు. ఎంత చెడ్డవాడైన, ఎన్ని అడ్డ దారులు తొక్కినా, ఒక్కసారి మనసు లోతు లోకి వెళ్తే, అందులో రవ్వంతైనా మనస్సాక్షి పలుకుతుంది అని, పాత్రల సంభాషణలలో, కొన్ని సందర్భాలలో మనకి గుర్తు చేస్తారు.

చివరగా, రావూరి భరద్వాజ గారి గురించి. అయన, విజయనగర్ కాలనీ లో ఒక సాధారణమైన ఇంట్లో ఉండేవారు. తన కళను, తాను నేర్చుకున్న మెళుకువలను ఎప్పుడు అదుపులో ఉంచుకుని, ‘పాకుడు రాళ్లకు దూరంగా,తన పని తాను చేసుకుపోయారు. అయన వేషధారణ కూడా చాల సాదాసీదాగా ఒక లుంగీ, లాల్చీ తెల్ల గడ్డంతో, చాల మందికి కనిపించేవారు. నాకు కూడా మా నాన్న గారు చెప్పే దాకా, అయన ఎంత పెద్ద రచయిత అని తెలియ లేదు. ఒక రకంగా, అయన పుస్తకం మనకు చెప్పీ చెప్పని జాగ్రత్తలు, అయన జీవితంలో కూడా పాటించారు అనడం లో అతిశయోక్తి కాదేమో. కల – కాంక్ష, ఆకలి-ఆశ, ఆశ-అత్యాశ, లౌక్యం -మోసం, ఆస్తి-ఆడంబరం…ఇలాంటి పదాలలో ఉన్న చిరు గీతను,వారు ఎన్నటికీ మర్చి పోలేదేమో అనిపిస్తుంది. కొన్ని నియమాలు, కొంత ప్రణాళిక, ఒక రొటీన్…వారి జీవితంలో మనకి కనపడుతుంది. వారిని చాలా సార్లు విజయనగర్ కాలనీ లో చూసాను,.,వాటిలో కొన్ని సార్లైనా వారు రోజూ దర్శించే వారి అర్ధాంగి కాంతం గారి సమాధి బాటలో లో కూడా కావొచ్చు. ఒక అసాధారణ వ్యక్తి ఎంత సాధారణంగా ఉండొచ్చో చెప్పిన వ్యక్తి భరద్వాజ గారు. అయన గురించి తలుచుకుంటే కాబోలు నాకు ఈ వ్యాసం మొదట్లో, పోతన గుర్తొచ్చారు.

The movie ‘Soorarai pottru’ came out with one of the best teasers in the recent times. It captures the raw energy for a first generation entrepreneur (Suriya), who refuses to take, no for an answer. This made me curious to read ‘Simply Fly: A Deccan Odyssey’, by Captain Gopinath, who inspired director Sudha Kongara and writers, to weave a film around some of the incidents from his life. And, the book makes for a terrific read and offers several takeaways in management and leadership.

Just like Joseph Campbell’s journey of mythological hero, Captain Gopinath one fine day leaves his village, joins the army, explores new worlds, comes back with the foils, becomes an entrepreneur and finally embarks on his most important of his dreams. While he chases his dreams and makes them into reality, the world and people around him change for the better.

What is heartening about the book, is the account of an entrepreneur who overcomes the obstacles when he is convinced that he is damn right about it, and how the world (atleast a part of it) conspires to clear the clouds for his flight of dreams.

Yayati: A Classic Tale of Lust by V.S. Khandekar interprets the mythological tale of Yayati, Devayani, Sharmistha, and Kacha, in an interesting manner, told from the points of view of Yayati, Devayani, and Sharmistha.

The story of Yayati presented in Mahabharatha and puranas, is popular for two themes. 1) A father asking his son to transfer youth to him, to avoid his curse of old age. 2) Indulgence in pleasures that keeps one away from the spiritual path…rather, how indulgence in pleasures is mistaken for happiness.

Sahitya Academy award winner V.S.Khandekar, weaves a meaningful tale through the voices of the key characters as he explores the purpose behind ones’ lives. Especially through characters of Devayani and Yayati, he brings forth the ‘ego’ play in various dimensions and how base emotions can create havoc in internal and external being of the key characters. While all that is bad is portrayed through the two characters Yayati and Devayani, he uses Kacha and Puru for presenting the good or rather the ideal state of human being. Sharmistha and Yati are the two in-between characters who eventually go all the way in the end.

The book is full of interesting observations and quotes on the moral dilemmas of human beings. How many pleasures and how much of them…and how long? Is happiness all about youth? Is youth overrated? Is youth so sought after, as it precedes old age and death? If death is staring at all of our faces and if our present is all we have,  should we squander it away without enjoying it? Or should we let it go, to reflect on the bigger meaning of life?  Can one enjoy and still be pure? These questions are answered without any judgment through the eyes of the characters. For instance, Yayati ponders on controlling his desire through grihastha ashram (life of a householder), while wondering at the equanimity of Kacha, ascetic. In contrast, Kacha, the ascetic, makes worldly choices for the greater good of the community.  This narrative in itself can be considered as a masterstroke. We readers are allowed to make up our mind based on what is presented, thus making an interesting read.

In one of the versions of Yayati story, it is said that he lived a life of  1000 years of pleasure after exchanging his cursed old age with his son Puru and only then he realizes the folly of it to give back his youth. However, in this book, it is compressed to a few minutes but the author uses it to present a great transformation in the key characters. This is nothing short of a coup de grace and uplifts the author’s purpose.

Overall, a great book not just to sample a unique story from Hindu mythology but also open the windows of inquiry into the meaning of life…or to plain simply wonder about the differences between pleasures and happiness. Is a pleasure nothing but a manifestation of ego, while happiness is the dissolution of it? Pleasures are transient but happiness is ongoing? May these questions linger around long after you put down this book.

Tailpiece:

• The character of Mandar is a very interesting one (dealt briefly) and it has a resemblance to the controversial sex gurus.

• The plot points so to speak, that cause a change in the character arcs, happen because of Devayani’s action. While Kacha cursed by Devayani, continues to go higher on his ascetic path, Yayati on the other hand when spurned by Devayani, slides down into the abyss of indulgences. The course which one embraces at life’s cross roads, is purely a individual choice, and this is beautifully portrayed in the book. Life is not all fate, perhaps.
