Knowledge@Wharton: How does UTV structure its deals with Hollywood studios?

Screwvala:Well, we have only dealt with them twice — once for
The Namesake and then for The Happening. We don’t have a long-term
strategy about wanting to be in Hollywood or hoisting our flag here.
We are very selective.
We like working with certain people — and that is what we do.

The way we structure our deals is to work closely with the director.
It is imperative to work with a studio because the way the film is marketed
is crucial. In this particular genre of The Happening — which is sci-fi
horror — we wanted to work with a studio that had a strong international
presence; Night’s movies do as well internationally as they do in the U.S.
We also wanted a studio that understood the sci-fi horror genre, and Fox
is top-of-the-line in that regard. Night was excited, as we were. We first
signed a deal with Night, and then both of us went together to Fox.

Why San Francisco Is No. 1

San Francisco is this year’s best city for young professionals because of
its ability to attract and retain talent. It does this by offering long-term job
opportunities, plenty of singles and impressive starting salaries.

The City by the Bay outshined the rest of the field in attracting alumni
from the nation’s top schools. More of the class of 1998 from Harvard,
Stanford, Rice, Princeton, Duke and Northwestern picked San Francisco
as home, 10 years out of school, compared with any other metro.
These are graduates with the skills to work virtually wherever they want,
and this measure is an indicator of where high-caliber professionals have
decided to settle, based on a combination of job and lifestyle factors.

Offshoring: India still No. 1

The research analyst’s Global Delivery Index (GDI) released this week
indicated that India is still the offshoring country of choice.
In its second edition, IDC’s GDI ranks 35 cities in the region
based on criteria such as labor and rent costs, language skills
and political risk.

Two other Indian cities also made it to the top 10 list–New Delhi
edged out Manila for the number two spot, while Mumbai dropped three
places from last year’s list to seventh.
